| The centuries old inn once served the lay accommodation requirements of the medieval Abbey of Strata Florida. The abbey was founded in the 12th century by the Cistercian Order who sought out wild and lonely places and none more remote and serene was found than here in the ‘Vale of Flowers’ (Ystrad Fflur). A public footpath from the inn to abbey, that once guided monks and pilgrims, and drovers with their herds of black cattle toward the wilderness and distant markets, still makes a leafy trail along the banks of the river Teifi. Another ancient path from the inn leads to Ffair Rhos, to Ysbyty Ystwyth, and to the crossing of the Mynach gorge at Devil’s Bridge, which earliest structure, c.1188, still intact, is credited to Strata Florida monks. Pontrhydfendigaid, on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains, is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the route of the Cambrian Way Long Distance Footpath. The Cambrians are different, in wildness and seclusion, where it is possible to walk all day in solitude, with just the sound of the wind, birds or sheep. The river below the village flows directly to the most striking feature of mid-Wales, Cors Caron, one of the finest examples in Europe of what is known as a ‘raised bog’. The Black Lion offers a truly warm welcome, where real ales can be enjoyed. Oak beams, cavernous fireplace and other original features exude a genuine ambience of a Welsh inn of an earlier age. The Old Auction Room is available for moderately sized private functions. Evening meals can be taken in the formal dining room, or in the bar where meals are available from lunchtime. Packed lunches can be provided. Secure drying room and bike parking available. Public bar, dining room, bar toilet and ground floor annexe are wheelchair accessible, but not in guest bathrooms. Perfectly located for cycling (original local C.T.C. headquarters), history and nature walks, bird watching, painting, fishing, golfing, or just relaxing. The National Library of Wales and County Record Office are in Aberystwyth. The original coach house and stables within the Black Lion Yard have been converted to guest bedrooms, including the installation of double glazed windows. Each warm and comfortably furnished guest bedroom has a bathroom en-suite, a colour TV and a tea or coffee making facility, that has a Three Star rating of the Welsh Tourist Board. The cottage-style ground floor bedrooms are wheelchair accessible, though not in the bathrooms. The seven modernised bedrooms have double or twin beds, and the family room has a double bed and a pair of bunk beds. | |
