Mid Wales Birdwatching Holidays

The best of Welsh birding throughout the year.

The heart of Pentir Pumlumon country is the base for escorted birdwatching holidays in the county of Ceredigion.

Since 1997 we have been able to show our guests the remarkably attractive and varied scenery in this part of Wales and its impressive wealth of birdlife.

Famous as the area where Britain’s only native Red Kites were to be found, it now has a large, thriving population of these spectacular birds.
However our guests also come to see other special birds including Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts, Whinchats, Wood Warblers, Chough, Peregrines, Merlins and Goosanders. Sea-bird colonies at the coast, estuary birds on the Dyfi and a full range of other woodland, moorland, river valley and coastal birds ensure that there is much to see throughout the year.

We pride ourselves on the relaxed nature of our holidays.
Nevertheless we generally see an impressive number of bird species and have broken the 100 barrier after only a few days on several occasions.
Rarities have come our way, including Squacco Heron, Montague’s Harrier and Common Crane. Summer evening trips to Nightjar sites can be arranged.

Comfortable en-suite accommodation is provided either at a guest house in the Ystwyth valley or a country hotel in the Rheidol valley and both are well known for the quality of their cuisine.
The choice is yours.

Our location means that we never have to travel very far in our Land Rover to enjoy our birdwatching.

The size of our groups is generally kept within a maximum of 6/7. This ensures that everyone has the opportunity to get a good look at all the birds and, importantly, be able to identify them from aspects of appearance or behaviour or song or calls.
Larger groups from bird clubs are always welcome.

Many of our birdwatchers are clearly experienced and well travelled but just as many would regard themselves as relative beginners and all are most welcome.

The main features of Mid Wales Birdwatching Holidays can be summarised as follows:

1) A wide range of stunning coastal and inland scenery.

2) Small escorted groups with an experienced leader who has known the area for very many years.

3) Flexibility of booking. We do not operate to set dates but organise groups when people wish to come and for as long or short a period as is requested. Alternatively people enquire as to when there are vacancies in groups already organised.

4) Minimal time spent travelling to our bird- watching locations in our Land Rover.

5) As much or as little walking as people request. Some groups enjoy some fairly strenuous walks; most are content with more gentle strolls.

6) Welcoming, friendly and comfortable accommodation with en-suite rooms, excellent breakfasts, packed lunches and evening meals. Vegetarians are very well catered for.

7) With low overheads our prices are very reasonable and include accommodation, all meals and escorted birdwatching.

8) Birdwatching beginners are always welcome.

 9)  Our guests are provided with detailed travel directions, bird lists, a copy of the latest Ceredigion annual Bird Report and a year’s membership of The Welsh Kite Trust.

10)  Guests choosing to arrive by train will be collected from Aberystwyth  station and those arriving by National Express Coaches will be dropped off at  our chosen hotel.

   11)  A rich variety of birdlife during all four seasons ensuring good birdwatching whatever month our guests choose to come.

For more information please ask for one of our fully illustrated brochures or view our web site which is also packed with photographs. Both give full details of the local countryside and its birdlife, the accommodation we provide, bird and mammal lists and the tariff.

Many of our guests have returned for a second and even third and fourth holidays with us.
Several have had their holidays as a present from their families and we are always delighted to make such arrangements.
